Process: Journal of Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Scholarship invites submissions for issue 3.2, On Kinship. The journal seeks work that uses kinship, broadly understood, as a framework for thinking about human relationships and how we conceive of our connections and disconnections to one another. How do fluid or rigid notions of kinship—biological, communal, familial, public and private, normative and non-normative, legal, global, national, cultural—shape our beliefs, our politics, our understandings of history or heritage, our approaches to science? How do definitions of kin and non-kin include and exclude? How can shifting ideas of kinship change the way we think and interact?

We will consider submissions that engage with ideas about kinship in any field, including creative and critical pieces. Potential submissions might address but are not limited to the following:

  • Kinship in political discourse (“family values,” family separations, etc.)

  • Queer kinships, queer communities, queerness in and beyond families

  • Indigenous kinship structures

  • Parenthood and childhood; feminist studies of family

  • Non-human/post-human kinships

  • Kinship and race/ethnicity

  • Intergenerational kinships, heritage, and memory

  • Racism, nationalism, and ‘cultural heritage’

  • Transnational kinship; kinship across borders

  • Violence and kinship; disrupted kinships; erased kinships

  • Representing kinship in art and literature

  • Science and kinship (DNA, reproductive technologies, etc.)

  • Decolonizing kinship structures

This issue of Process will focus on kinship, but we welcome submissions on any topic. Be aware that general submissions, if accepted, will be saved for a suitable future issue at the discretion of the editorial board.

Please submit pieces for review by following the instructions on the Submissions page of the Process website: www.processjmus.org and include your full name and email address on the submitted document.

Questions may be directed to the editorial board at processj@uw.edu.
